Hugo Harttmann Vernier Compass, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lacquered brass instrument with 6 1/2-in. dia. engraved dial reading "Hugo Harttmann/Maker/Philadelphia," blued-steel needle with needle lifter on underside, outkeeper, and dual spirit levels. Note: Hugo Hartmann is listed as an instrument maker at 330 Noble St., Philadelphia, between 1853 and 1856.
