After Johann-Elias Haid (Augsburg, 1739-1809) Enamel Portrait Miniature of Commander John Paul Jones Unsigned. Polychrome enamel on a convex oval copper plate, 5 3/4 x 4 1/2 in., in a gold-painted frame with gesso ribbon and wreath. Condition: No obvious damage or repair to the portrait, frame has minor spots of gesso loss. Provenance: Sotheby Parke Bernet, mid 1970s. Note: The enamel portrait, likely made c. 1790-1800, is a rendition of the well-known mezzotint portrait John Paul Jones, Commander of a Squadron in the Service of the Thirteen United States of North America, 1779 published c. 1780, depicting Jones in a blue naval uniform with white facings and gilt epaulets holding a telescope with a ship on the sea in the background and a cliff to his right.
