Grain-painted and Decorated Jewelry Box, America, 19th century, the lid and front with painted bird and fruit decoration, the sides with floral sprays, all within a gold and yellow line border, the box opening to a mirrored lid interior and red-stained compartmented tray, ht. 5 1/4, wd. 13, dp. 6 3/4 in. Provenance: Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut. Christie's, January 18, 2008, Lot 684. Estimate $400-600 shrinkage to top has caused a crack at the back edge and the box does not close quite flush. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
