Carved Cherry Desk/Bookcase, Connecticut River Valley, possibly Deerfield, Massachusetts, area, c. 1780-90, the molded swan's neck cresting terminating in carved pinwheels and centering a plinth with applied shaped reeded device, above cupboard doors and candle slides below, set into lower section with slant-lid opening to valanced compartments, central fan-carved drawer, and eight straight-fronted drawers, above a case of four graduated thumb-molded drawers on ogee bracket base, ht. 88 1/2, wd. 37, dp. 19 1/2 in. Provenance: Sold at Ginsburg and Levy, c. 1930, to Edith Jette. Sold at Parke-Bernet in the 1950s to Kenneth Byard of Silvermine, Connecticut, who sold it to an agent for a Dr. Bush of Monson, Massachusetts; from the estate of Dr. Bush, purchased by Sam Herrup, from whom the consignors acquired it c. 1995.
