Identified Army of the James "Butler" Medal, c. 1865, silver medal obverse is marked "FERRO IIS LIBERATIS PERVENIET/US COLORED/TROOPS," suspended by a red, white, and blue ribbon, at the top is a wreath marked "ARMY OF THE JAMES," brass tab above the wreath marked "I present this medal of my husband to/Samuel B. Bancroft Lt. 38th N.Y.C.T. for/his Bravery in the War of 1861 and many/Kindnesses to the Widow of his dead comrade/Margret Minetar Buffalo, NY. 1881." Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio. Estimate $400-600 Medal is in fine condition with only light patination on the silver and brass.
