Canadian School, Early 19th Century Portrait of Jonathan Bliss Unsigned, subject identified in information attached to the reverse. Oil on board, 30 x 23 1/2 in., in a mahogany veneer frame. Condition: Craquelure, darkened varnish. Note: Jonathan Bliss was born in 1742 in Springfield, Massachusetts, educated at Harvard College, and worked in the law office of Lieutenant-Governor Thomas Hutchinson. At the outbreak of war in 1775, Bliss accompanied Earl Percy on his march to Concord. An ardent Loyalist, he moved to England later that year. He was appointed Attorney General of New Brunswick in 1785 and soon took residence there. He died in 1822.
