Thomas Hovenden (American, 1840-1895) Enfant à la Lecture Signed "THovenden" u. l., titled on a fragmentary printed label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 8 5/8 x 6 1/4 in. (22.0 x 16.0 cm), framed. Condition: Small patch reinforcement u.c. with corresponding dot of retouch to the recto. Estimate $1,500-2,000 The area of retouch measures 1/4 inch and is located just slightly above the sitter's head to the left. It appears to have been a small tear caused perhaps by the work being bumped, since the surface is slightly depressed in that area. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000). Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner Inc. shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
