Including: a receipt for $100 in Treasury Notes, signed by Treasury Secretary Gilbert Rodman (1800-1862) 21 September 1861; an October 31, 1862 letter signed by the Commandant of the U.S. Navy Yard in Boston, J.B. Montgomery, instructing acting assistant Surgeon John Mathews that applications for detachment and extension of leave must be made to the Secretary of the Navy; a December 8, 1862 letter grating leave to the same Mathews signed by Montgomery and Gideon Welles; another letter signed by Montgomery dated December 10, 1862, to the same addressee, granting leave from the bark, Gem of the Seas ; the acceptance of John Mathews's resignation from the Navy, April 1, 1863, signed by Gideon Welles; Form 31, Certificate of Non-Liability to be Given by the Board of Enrollment for Charles L. Smith of Boston, who did not have to serve in the Civil War because he found a substitute to serve for him, signed by President of the Board of Enrollment, and others; [and] the parchment military commission of Charles B. Lyelll of New York state, promoting him to lieutenant in the 13th Regiment of Cavalry, signed by New York state Governor Horatio Seymour, and Acting Assistant Adjutant General J.B. Stonehouse. (7)
