Grace G. Gassette (American, 1871-1955) Portrait of a Woman with a Dog . Signed and possibly dated "Grace Gassette/..." l.l. Oil on canvas, 60 x 45 in., framed. Condition: Craquelure, varnish inconsistencies, paint losses to u.l. and l.l., surface grime. N.B. Chicago painter and sculptor Grace Gassette was a student of Mary Cassatt and was part of Gertrude Stein's circle in Paris. She was best known for developing orthopedic surgical appliances for wounded soldiers in Paris during World War I, for which she was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
