View of the City of St. Louis, MO: The Great Fire of the City on the 17th & 18th May 1849. Engraving. Engraved by Julius Hutawa. Framed and matted. This work commemorates the Great Fire of 1849, which destroyed much of St. Louis' riverfront, including many steamboats and buildings. After the fire, residents rebuilt with more fire-resistant materials, like cast iron and brick. This work illustrates the city's cathedral and courthouse, which both survived the fire.
