This work commemorates the Great Fire of 1849, which destroyed much of St. Louis' riverfront, including many steamboats and buildings. After the fire, residents rebuilt with more fire-resistant materials, like cast iron and brick. This work illustrates the city's cathedral and courthouse, which both survived the fire.
