Méliès, Georges. Over 75 Photographs of Méliès Films. An impressive group, including five 11 x 14” images of drawings executed for Méliès famous 1902 film, A Trip to the Moon, apparently printed from the films themselves by William Jamison, associate of Thomas Edison and curator of the Film Archive of the MoMa, in the 1940s; as well as dozens of images in other formats depicting scenes from other Méliès movies (Dancing Boots, Merry Frolics of Satan, Humanity Through the Ages, Grandmother’s Story), as well as one image depicting the interior of his famous glass movie studio outside of Paris. Circa 1940s. Image sizes vary from 3 x 4” to 11 x 14”. Generally very good condition. The photographs in this lot are of an undetermined age. Most were printed on thick stock, and date to the 1940s or earlier, though it is possible that many of the prints were made during Méliès’ lifetime. A booklet describing some of the photographs and their provenance by Father Cyprian Murray, the previous owner of the photographs (and student of film history), is included along with a short bibliography of references to Méliès, as well as other modern ephemera.
