French Gras Bayonet manufactured at the Deny arsenal in Paris in 1881, measuring 25-3/4" in length with steel crossguard width of 4". Hand engraved "L' Deny Paris 1881" to blade and marked to sheath "AB 91848". This style of bayonet was the last of the French "sword-type" bayonets. It was manufactured to fit the French Model 1874 "Gras" Infantry Rifle, a refinement of the Model 1866 Chassepot Infantry Rifle. The "Gras" was manufactured from 1874 to about 1885. They were used in combat from the French Indo-China in 1873-1874 and again in 1882-1883 through Word War I. In overall good condition consistent with age. Provenance: from the estate of a prominent Richmond, VA family, known to have been actively involved in the United States Civil War.
