(British, 18th Century) Portrait of a Lady oil on canvas signed H Pickering (lower right) 50 1/4 x 40 inches. In decent, stable condition overall consistent with age. Canvas has been re-lined. Craquelure throughout. Four vertical streaks of gray paint to the canvas, the longest of which is approximately 7 1/4 inches. Areas of retouch visible with the naked eye on the woman's face, neck and bosom in the form of white patches. General layer of grime to the surface of the canvas. Minor depression to the canvas in the upper-right register over the window. Examination under UV light reveals an overall varnish and scattered areas of retouch, particularly evident on the bodice of the dress and the perimeter of the visible canvas where it meets the frame.
