$7,500

Likely American, 19th century, possibly earlier.. A hand carved wood and polychrome articulating figural masthead or ship's figurehead in the form of a young man or boy of near-human scale, holding a white dove bird, possibly a reference to the biblical story of Noah and the arc with the Old Testament prophet released a dove while safe in the ship to find land, apparently unmarked. Overall approximately 35" x 17" x 16". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
