Silver Porringer, Samuel Minott, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1770, the slightly flared rim on a bulbous body with convex base, the pierced scroll handle engraved "APA" above "JP" and marked on the back "MINOTT" in a rectangular cartouche, the exterior of the body is engraved "AME to AME, Jr./1866-1875," approx. 8.4 troy oz., lg. 8 1/4, dia. 5 1/2 in. Note: The engraved inscription on the exterior refers to Amasa Mason Eaton (1841-1914) and Amasa Mason Eaton, Jr. (1874-1903). Amasa Mason Eaton, of Providence, Rhode Island, graduated from Brown University in 1861 and was a lawyer, author, and politician. He served in the First Rhode Island Regiment at the beginning of the Civil War. Later he studied law at Harvard University, graduating in 1878. Eaton was a member and president of the town council of North Providence, 1863-1865; member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, 1865-1866 and 1872-1874; member of the Providence common council, 1874-1875; and of the Providence Board of Aldermen, 1875. He was Rhode Island Commissioner on Uniformity of State legislation and president of the National Conference. He also served as president of the Rhode Island Horticultural Society. Among other publications, Eaton was the author of the book Constitution Making in Rhode Island (Providence: E.L. Freeman & Sons, 1899).
