Davenport Cabinet. London: Joseph Bland, ca. 1876. Fine early example of this innocent-looking cabinet which switches, vanishes, or produces anything that fit in its drawers. Hardwood construction with Ivorine handles and plush drawer liners. 4 " high. An inked notation on the rear of the cabinet reads: "To Johnny Jones from Carlton King Jan. 2nd/32. This trick was given to me by Prof Ainsworth who purchased it at Bland's, London in 1876." Jones and King were well known magicians in Chicago in the 1930s. Ainsworth was a Victorian-era magician who went on to manage Hippodrome theatres in Blackpool and Workington, England.
