Robert-Houdin Mystery Clock. Paris: Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, mid-nineteenth century. A handsome example of Robert-Houdin's "double" mystery clock, with a clear glass dial to which the single hand is attached, which is, in turn, resting on a tall clear glass tube, providing no apparent connection between the clock and any cleverly hidden mechanism. Even so, the clock would keep time and chime when wound, as if it were an ordinary timepiece. Blue plush-covered hardwood base accented with press appliquŽs at its corners. With key. Chimes working; clockworks in need of adjustment. 20 " high. Face repainted, with the Robert-Houdin name poorly lettered. Re-gilded. In a custom-made shipping case bearing the label of Carl Williams, the craftsman who last serviced the clock.
