Red-lacquered Togidashi Maki-e Box, Japan, Izuka Toyo II (1766-1844), two-tier rectangular form with an inner tray and cover, the box decorated with dragonflies in iro-e taka maki-e including mother-of-pearl pieces against a red ground with gold and silver flecks, the interiors and the bottom lacquered in black flecked with gold, the inner tray, resting on four bracket feet, gold-lacquered, depicting various insects in iro-e taka maki-e , signed "Kanshosai" in the bottom left corner with kao mark, 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 x 8 3/8 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Mrs. Hope Goddard Iselin of New York and Newport.
