Compass- and Fan-carved and Polychrome Paint-decorated Pine Wall Box, Maine, 19th century, the compass top continuing to ram's horn scrolls and a carved fan, above the box with canted front and similar carved fan flanked by diamond-carved sides, old surface, (imperfections including paint loss), ht. 19 3/4, wd. 11 1/2 in. Provenance: According to a previous owner, this box was purchased from a resident of Lincolnville, Maine. That Lincolnville resident said that it had been passed down in her family, and that it had been made by a family member.
