THIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE gouache on paper laid on board 50. 7 x 67 cm (22 1/2 x 26 3/8 in.) signed lower right; titled and signed on verso LOT NOTES Amshey Nurenberg was born in 1887 in Elisavetgrad (current-day Kropyvnytskyi / Kirovohrad, Ukraine), and studied art at the Odessa School of Arts before continuing his education in Paris. While in Paris, he lived in the Latin Quarter with other artists from Russia and shared an atelier for a year with Marc Chagall. Although he moved back to Odessa in 1913, where he became an extremely influential and active revolutionary artist, Nurenberg is still associated with the "School of Paris" artists. In Russia, Nurenberg's artisitic activities were far-reaching: He was the first art columnist of Pravda newspaper, worked on the ROSTA windows together with Vladimir Mayakovsky, and was professor of art history at VKhUTEMAS. An oil on canvas by Amshei Nurenberg measuring 34.5 x 40 cm. recently sold at Sotheby's London (June 3, 2014) for £20,000 GBP.
