Japanese, late 19th/ early 20th century Meiji Period (1868-1912). A fine Choshuzan Satsuma earthenware scenic table lamp, possibly converted from a jardiniere, of tapering square form raised on a ring foot and having very small mouth at top surmounting a short neck, the whole decorated with hand painted dragons, figural groupings, landscape elements including mountains and rivers, large expressive Japanese faces, the iconic Rising Sun motif originally from the Edo Period Japanese flag, and geometric patterning, the body's top surface with gilt cruciform medallions alternating with medallions of three paulownia leaves, the whole highlighted with gilt accents and textured white enamel dotting of varying sizes. Underside with overglaze red seal mark with "Dai Nippon", also with Choshuzan maker's mark and a painter's mark hand written in gold. Earthenware approximate height 14.5", 7.75" square.
