German School, first half 19th century. "Christus Erscheint der Maria im Garten (Christ Appearing to Mary in the Garden", oil on tin panel, apparently unsigned. A wonderfully detailed and expertly executed diminutive religious painting depicting the Virgin Mother Mary kneeling in a garden clearing as Christ, depicted with hat and pick and surrounded by the ethereal glow or halo, with Italianate architecture in the distance. With inscription to verso "Christus erscheint der Maria im garten nach Raphael." With label to verso with indistinct graphite inscription "Mr..." Framed approximately 11.5" x 10.5". Unframed approximately 7.825" x 3.75".
