Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942) Sultry Night , 1937-38, edition of about 100, published by Associated American Artists, New York, in 1939 (Czestochowski, 4). Signed "Grant Wood" in pencil l.r., identified on a label from AAA that accompanies the lot. Lithograph on Rives paper with watermark, image size 9 x 11 3/4 in. (22.7 x 29.7 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Full margins with deckled edges, subtle indentations into paper on verso. Provenance: Descended within the family to the current Massachusetts estate. N.B. The edition was planned to be 260, but the United States Post Office objected to the potentially lascivious nature of the image, and banned shipping of the prints, hence the curtailed edition.
