Eugène Boudin (French, 1824-1898) Trouville. Marché aux poissons (esquisse) , alternatively titled Le Retour du Plugastel Stamped "EB" l.r., titled "Le Retour..." on a label affixed to the back of the frame. Oil on paper mounted to cradled panel, 9 3/8 x 12 in. (23.6 x 30.5 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Toning. Provenance: A Maine estate, purchased at Sotheby & Co., London, Important Impressionist and Modern Drawings, Paintings and Sculpture, March 26, 1958, Lot 162. N.B. This oil sketch has been reviewed by Manuel Schmit via photographs and will be included in the new edition of the Catalogue Raisonné of the painted work of Eugène Boudin now in preparation. A letter to this effect accompanies the lot, as does a copy of the above referenced Sotheby's catalog from the 1958 auction featuring this work. Mr. Schmit provided the primary title for the sketch, and the alternate title is taken from the label and from the Sotheby's catalog entry.
