Conestoga Wagon Wrought Iron Fish-form Axe Holder, Pennsylvania, first-half 19th century, impressed detail with dark patina, lg. 8 1/4 in. Literature: A similar axe-head socket, from the Cincinnati Art Museum, is pictured in Robert Bishop's AMERICAN FOLK SCULPTURE, (New York, 1983), p. 129, fig. 219. Another example is illustrated in "Art in Wrought Iron," THE MAGAZINE ANTIQUES, (April, 1977), p. 793. The Pennsylvania Farm Museum of Landis Valley owns a third example which is illustrated in THE MAGAZINE ANTIQUES, (September, 1986), p. 516, fig. 2.
