Carved and Varnished Ironwood Tree-form Figure, America, late 19th century, possibly African-American, with stand, ht. 22 1/4 in. N.B. The figure was found in Brooklyn, New York, during an excavation and removal of an old church burial ground in 1947-49. The cemetery of the church was located at Ave. I and East 32nd or 33rd Streets. The root figure was given to the previous owner, Richard C. Kyllo, now a general antiques dealer in New Jersey, when he was a young boy of 4 or 5, living in the Brooklyn neighborhood. The figure came from the back section of the cemetery which was reserved for the poor. The owner coated it with shellac to help preserve it. Provenance: Aarne Anton/American Primitive Gallery.
