Anglo-American School, Late 18th/Early 19th Century Two Silhouette Portraits, one of a boy, Thomas P. Bancroft (b. Jan. 5, 1829, d. May 30, 1838), when he was five years old, unsigned, watercolor, ink, and gouache on card with gilt embellishments, 2 3/4 x 3 3/8 in., in an oval gilt frame within a black-painted wooden frame, 4 3/4 x 5 3/4 in.; the other purportedly of Col. David Townsend Jr., unsigned, hollow-cut and watercolor on paper, 4 3/4 x 7 3/8 in., framed. Condition: Toning on Bancroft portrait. N.B. Inscribed on the reverse "Col. David Townsend Jr. Born Waltham Mass. 1777, cabinet maker Boston Mass., Colonel of the First Regiment Mass. Militia, Keeper of the Bird Tavern."
