Two Related Items, a needlework sampler/family record, "Wrought by Ruth Gage Dow Weare 4 mo 16. 1819," New Hampshire, listing the births and marriage of Winthrop and Mary Dow, the names and dates of their children, silk on linen, the upper panels of alphabets with inspirational verses below, each panel highlighted by geometric devices and decorative embroidery, the wide meandering floral border centered between two narrow sawtooth borders, framed; accompanying the needlework is a whale ivory book-form box with a note stating the box was "presented to Maranda J. Dow, 1855, by her great Aunt Ruth Dow Gage aged 87 years," (imperfections), frame 22 3/4 x 17 3/4, box 1 x 3 x 2 in.
