Roger Tory Peterson (American, 1908-1996) Two Gulls/An Illustration Signed "RTPETERSON" l. r., inscribed "Nob from Kent's Island! January February, 1938 Bird Lore" on the reverse. Gouache with ink and graphite on paperboard, 13 7/8 x 13 7/8 in. (35.2 x 35.2 cm), unframed. Condition: Staining, toning, annotations to lower margin. Provenance: From the artist to the family of the present owner. N.B. Frank M. Chapman, ornithologist at the American Museum of Natural History, owned the magazine Bird Lore from its beginning in 1899. In 1935 the Audubon Association purchased the magazine, making Bill Vogt the editor. Vogt redesigned the magazine with Roger Tory Peterson. Peterson is best known for his revolutionary approach to the identification of birds, but was also a trained artist, studying at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in the late 1920s. Not surprisingly, one of Peterson's major influences was Louis Aggassiz Fuertes.
