Federal Mahogany Veneer Desk/Bookcase, Massachusetts, 1800-10, the flaring cove-molded cornice above the recessed paneled doors which open to two adjustable interior scratch-beaded shelves on a bowfront lower case of cockbeaded graduated drawers, the top one is fitted with a felt-lined sliding writing surface, which opens to a cavity, all above a molded base and bracket feet with front and side shaping, replaced brasses, old surface, (very minor imperfections), ht. 66 5/8, case wd. 31 3/4, lower case wd. 33 5/8, overall wd. 34 1/2 in. Provenance: According to oral history, this piece originally belonged to Gouveneur Morris Phelps, who relocated to Ashfield, Massachusetts, from New York City.
