Polychrome Carved Wood Tobacconist Indian Figure, America, probably third quarter 19th century, the standing figure of an Indian woman with carved feather headdress, earrings, necklace and costume holds a banded bunch of cigars in one hand, (imperfections), ht. 71 3/8 in. Provenance: Deaccessioned from a Northeastern institution. N.B. The figure was purportedly carved by Thomas Brooks of New York, c. 1860-70. Brooks was a former ships' figurehead carver.
