Montadier (French, ac. LeHavre, 1812-1848) France of New York...1827. Signed "Montadier." l.r. and titled below, ship identified on stern and flying house flag "F." Mixed media including watercolor, gouache, and pen and ink on paper, sheet size 17 x 21 3/8 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Laid down on paper, scattered areas of abrasion, overall toning. N.B. The ship France was built by Bergh and Co. New York in 1827. From 1827 to 1837, the vessel sailed in the New York Havre Second Packet Line, and in the ten years after 1837 made four voyages as a whaler out of Sag Harbor, New York. Montardier's Christian name is unknown. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem holds in its collection thirteen of the artist's watercolors.
