Chinese Export School, 19th Century The American Clipper Ship Vancouver in Chinese Waters. Unsigned, ship identified on stern, flying an American flag. Oil on canvas, 25 x 37 1/4 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Scattered retouch, areas of alligatoring, craquelure and losses. N.B. The vessel, a small pre-clipper China trader or "East Indiaman" with painted ports, was built in Medford, Massachusetts, by F. Waterman and H. Ewell for D.C. Bacon of Boston in 1845. The Vancouver sailed from Canton to New York in ninety-six days, among the fastest passages recorded. A notation to the reverse reads "A.M. Lunti Commander."
