Boris Schatz (Russian, 1866-1932) "The Scribe. " Identified and titled on label on reverse. Oil on panel, 9 3/8 x 7 1/2 in., in original Bezalel brass relief frame. Condition: Surface grime and craquelure. Note: This painting is found in the exhibition catalogue entitled BORIS SCHATZ: 31 OIL PAINTINGS, by Prof. Dr. Joseph Klausner, Jerusalem, 1929. See lot 7 of this sale for a poster for that same exhibit. An early Zionist, Schatz traveled to Jerusalem in 1906 where he founded the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, whose products, ranging from paintings to metalwork to woodwork to textiles embodied an artistic style suitable for the new Jewish nation. Under Schatz's leadership, the movement successfully blended the exoticism of the Orient and the biblical and Jewish-Zionist symbols with the more "international" Arts & Crafts aesthetic to produce a very special art.
