American School, 19th Century Landscape Along the Hudson River. 1820's, the home with mountains in the background on a hill with a river and horses in the foreground. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 28 1/2 x 35 in., in gilt frame. Condition: minor repairs and craquelure. Provenance: The consignor purchased this painting in the 1970's from a descendant of the dePeyster family of the Hudson River Valley area of New York. Note: This historical allegorical painting depicts the 1780 meeting of Major Andre, aide-de-camp to General Clinton and Benedict Arnold, in front of the home of Joshua H. Smith (called "Betmont") to conclude the arrangement to deliver West Point to the British. The event took place in 1780. The painting to memorialize the event was done in the 1820's when the remains of Major Andre were removed to Westminster Abbey, at the request of the Duke of York. Literature: The historical information appears in the publication, Benedict Arnold The Dark Eagle , by Brian Richard Boylan, published by W.W. Norton & Co., June 1793.
