American School, first half 20th century. "Wistful Woman", oil on canvas, indistinguishably signed lower right, possibly "Geo Love" for George Love (American (Rhode Island), b.1887). Finely painted American Tonalist painting depicting figures in a landscape, at center a woman in long dress and hat with her chin raised toward sky and leafy tree branch in hand accompanied at left by a loosely rendered dog as she stands halfway down a backlit hilly dirt path with the sky to background illuminated by a setting sun out of view behind the hillside, the cloudy sky handled in impasto emphasizing the dark moodiness of the work. Verso of stretcher with fragments of newspaper. Framed approximately 28.5" x 22.5". Unframed approximately 24" x 18".
