Chippendale Mahogany Veneer Gilt-Incised Looking Glass, England, 1750-80, the scrolled crest supports a gilt urn with leaf and floral sprays above a gilt-incised frieze and a mirror glass with scrolled parcel-gilt liner, flanked by cascading leafage and foliate gilt carving above a pendant with gilt incising, (restoration), ht. 52, wd. 21 1/2 in. Provenance: Family descent from Marshall Jewell of Farmington, Connecticut, a 19th century Governor of Connecticut and Post Master General under President Ulysses S. Grant. Note: It originally bore the label of "Thomas Aldersey Looking Glass Maker in London."
