Stoneware Jug with John Brown Inscription, America, 19th century, salt glazed ovoid jug with handle and cobalt blue inscription "Dec 1st 12, O, clock P. M. Gov Wise Sleeps with one eye open, Expecting the rescue of John Brown," (minor glaze wear at rim, potstone chip near base), ht. 11 1/4 in. N.B. The abolitionist John Brown was captured during an attempted raid of the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and was executed by hanging December 2, 1859.
