Attributed to William Athearn Holmes (American, 19th Century) Portrait of the American Screw Steamer City of Birmingham. Unsigned, vessel identified on pennant and bow. Oil on canvas, showing the steamer in choppy coastal waters, 24 x 36in., framed. Condition: Paint loss in water area, minor small spots of retouch. Note: The City of Birmingham was an iron single screw schooner with three decks and a saloon deck, constructed in 1888 at the Delaware River Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania. Its owner was the Ocean Steam Ship Co. of Savannah, Georgia and the port of registry was Savannah, as well.
