American School, Late 18th/Early 19th Century Portrait of Revolutionary Colonel Christopher Greene (1737-1781). Unsigned, subject identified by inscriptions on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, showing a robust man with tricorn hat, blue military jacket with gold epaulets, 25 x 19 1/2 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Two tears, one patched tear, craquelure. Note: Christopher Greene was born in Warwick Rhode Island May 12, 1737. Among his accomplishments: He served in the Rhode Island legislature 1772-74, placed by General Washington in command of the first battalion under Benedict Arnold accompanying him to Quebec, was taken prisoner, exchanged, promoted to major, then colonel. He commanded the Rhode Island Regiment consisting of white, free black men, and a few Narragansett Indians, though over time, the majority of the men in this regiment were African American due to the terms of enlistment for former slaves.
