Paul Burlin (American, 1886-1969) Lot of Two Abstract Works Each signed and dated "Paul Burlin... ," one inscribed "MacDowell Colony" l.r. Watercolor on paper, sight sizes to 20 1/2 x 26 in. (52 x 66 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, fading, creasing, abrasions/losses, not examined out of frames. Provenance: From the estate of actress Martha Scott and musician Mel Powell. N.B. Mel Powell was a widely known performer and composer who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for his concerto Duplicates . Powell started as a jazz pianist, playing with the Benny Goodman Band at the age of 17. He abandoned the jazz world two years later and subsequently enrolled at Yale University as a composition student. In 1969, he was the founding dean at the California Institute of the Arts. Powell also experimented with electronic works in the 1960s. In his later years, he returned to playing jazz. Martha Scott was an actress who had many notable film, theater, and television roles. In 1938, Scott won the role of "Emily" in Thornton Wilder's play Our Town . She reprised that role in the movie version of the play in 1940, and received an Oscar nomination for her performance. Scott appeared in over twenty films including The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur , and television shows such as Dallas and the Bob Newhart Show . Her last appearance on Broadway was a "Goody Nurse" in The Crucible in 1991.
