Condition: Scattered retouch. N.B. Born in Durham, England, Brown was initially trained as a glassblower. After immigrating to the United States in 1853, Brown took a job in a Brooklyn glass factory. Encouraged by his boss to develop his talent for painting, Brown enrolled at the National Academy of Design. By the turn of the century, Brown had become one of America's most collected and reproduced artists. He is best known for his idealized portraits of urban street urchins. His work is now held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
