William Preston Phelps (American, 1848-1923) Autumn Birches Signed "WPPhelps" l. l. Oil on canvas, 14 x 20 in. (35.5 x 50.5 cm), in a Foster Brothers frame. Condition: Scattered retouch, subtle surface grime. N.B. Phelps is best known for landscape works of his native New Hampshire. Although he studied and traveled extensively in Europe as a young man, in 1890 he returned to Chesham, New Hampshire, to purchased his childhood home and farm. It was during this period of his career that Phelps is said to have created his best work - natural New England landscapes, many with views of Mt. Monadnock and its surrounds.
