Plains Painted Hide Dance Shield, late 19th century, the yellow stained circular form painted with two warriors on horseback facing each other, both wearing war bonnets with a long trailer, the bottom third painted green with a buffalo image, blue and red trade cloth attachments at the top, original tag on back of frame, part of the original wood hoop is included with the lot, (restoration to bottom of shield, not examined out of frame), dia. 18 in. Provenance: Charles Edward Mendenhall (1849-1937).
