American School/Southern Massachusetts, c. 1810 Portrait of Louise Hyde. Oil on canvas, the full length portrait depicts the very young child standing on a patterned ingrain carpet or floor cloth, holding an apple in one hand and gold fringed red drapery in the other; wearing an organza peach-colored transparent patterned dress accented by a green necklace and lace-bordered pantaloons with beige slippers, sight size 30 x 24 3/4 in.; the untouched canvas is stenciled on the reverse "W. WA (box) ESSE (box) 208 Washington Street Boston," and the strainer reads "2 3/30" in pencil. Condition: Unrestored, very minor paint loss. Provenance: Family descent from Louise Hyde of Brockton, Massachusetts, aunt of the consignor's maternal grandmother, Geneva Churchill, who also lived in Brockton. Two photos of Louise Hyde in later life accompany this lot. The first is a framed oval portrait of Louise as a young woman, the second, labeled "Aunt Louise Hyde Brockton, Mass." shows her as an elderly woman seated in a rocking chair before a fireplace in the 1890s.
