Wilde, Oscar (1854-1900), Autograph letter signed, [January 22, 1889], four pages, to Mr. Walter Hamilton, concerning his thoughts on parody, with holograph envelope, (slight fold weakness, slight soiling to envelope).Text in full: Dear Mr. Hamilton / I have never collected the parodies of my work in poetry - collecting contemporary things is like trying to hold froth in a sieve - the new ____ work of January 1882 had some admirable parodies as well as I remember - but as most of my poems are long and lyrical they have not I fancy been _____ models. I think the of books which you have kindly sent me most interesting - as parody, which is the muse with her tongue in her cheek, has always amused me - but it requires a light touch, a fanciful treatment, and, oddly enough, a love for the poet whom it caricatures. One's _____ can parody one - nobody else. Oscar Wilde
