Handmade Black Boy Rag Doll, late 19th/early 20th century, black stockinette with embroidered features and needle-sculpted and padded nose, pink-red smiling mouth (circular run by left eye, wear on nose), stitched-on black wooly wig, mitt hands, stitched joints at shoulders and hips, brown and black striped wool suit (some moth damage), burgundy cotton shirt with ruffled collar and bow (spotty fading), ht. 20 in. Provenance: From the MJ Chase Co., family legend indicates this doll was an experimental creation of Martha Jenks Chase.
