American School, 19th Century The Letter of Marque Brig "Grand Turk" of Salem, 14 Guns Saluting Marseilles 1815 Unsigned, titled below. Watercolor and gouache on paper, 23 1/2 x 36 in., in an early 20th century molded wood frame. Condition: Toning. Note: According to the Ship Registers of the district of Salem and Beverly Essex Institute in 1906, and related in a note affixed to the reverse, the brigantine "Grand Turk was built in Wiscasset, Maine, in 1812, and "was a celebrated privateer in the war of 1812." She was apparently owned in Boston and sailed in and out of Salem and after the war made merchant voyages for William Gray of Boston.
