George Nakashima (1905-1990) Large Free Edge English oak burl and walnut table New Hope, Pennsylvania, 1973 Large free edge burled english oak top with five butterfly joints with two canted supports joined to the (walnut) base cross stretcher balanced by two perpendicular supports, ht. 29, lg. 87, wd. 54 in Accompanied by a copy of the original receipt. Provenance: Estate of Reverend Thomas W. Phelan. Reverend Phelan's achievements were many, he was a chaplain at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an ensign in WWII, a scholar, writer, and teacher. He had a keen eye for life and beauty. It is fitting that Reverend Phelan admired and had a friendship with George Nakashima, as both were spiritual men with an understanding of all the forms of nature. This table was made especially for Reverend Phelan.
