Sold for:
$100,725

Rare Chippendale carved mahogany hairy paw foot easy chair, probably Charlestown, South Carolina, ca. 1755 , the front legs with extensive foliate, c-scroll and bellflower carving with very boldly carved hairy paw feet. The secondary woods are long leaf or yellow pine with tulip poplar arm rests and medial stretchers. The use of this form is quite rare, especially in the south. An easy chair at Winterthur Museum exhibits very similar knee carvings and construction in both the wings and conical arm supports and is now attributed to Charlestown, South Carolina.
